On May 15, 2006; Four candidates for Mayor of San Jose participated in a debate at the United Way Building at 1922 The Alameda in the Rose Garden district. This event was sponsored by:

Eco-Silicon Valley – an Our City Forest initiative
League of Conservation Voters
Greenbelt Alliance
Breathe California
Sierra Club

Participants were:
Dave Cortese
Michael Mulcahy
David Pandori
Chuck Reed

This debate was promoted as the premier opportunity for the candidates to tout their environmental credentials. A record of 21 questions were answered in the following categories:

* Toxic waste
* Park ordinances
* Habitat preservation policy
* Riparian corridor policy
* Development review
* General Plan review
* Green buildings
* Urban forestry
* Farmland protection
* Air quality
* EIR process
* Solid waste
* Open Space Initiative
* Groundwater protection/water quality
* Mayor’s Climate Protection Agreement (Kyoto Protocol)

The moderator of this debate was Barbara Marshman, associate editor of the Mercury News editorial pages.
